Summer is here and power bills are soaring. No one wants to sit in a home, sweltering from the heat. Lowering your power bills is possible with a few adjustments to your home. Living with expensive energy costs isn’t something anyone wants to do, so read on to learn about ways to reduce them.

Your HVAC system uses a lot of energy throughout the day, which is why it’s important to ensure that they are properly cleaned and receive maintenance regularly. You can hire a professional to come to your home to do this for you. There are key components of an air conditioner and furnace that has to be cleaned. Fine tuning your appliance will allow it to work more efficiently. When things start to malfunction, it will use up a lot of energy.

Don’t Allow Ducts to Leak

If you notice leakage coming from the HVAC ducts, don’t wait to fix the problem. It’s important to contact a technician right away. Ductwork can be tested for leaks by hiring a technician to come by and look at it.

Get Rid of Drafts

Don’t leave your windows open or cracked when using your heating and cooling system. Be sure to check them beforehand, so that your utility bill doesn’t skyrocket. Having a thermostat that is programmable is a good idea because it gives you more control over the temperature of your property. If you already have an electronic thermostat, learn how to use it, so that you can manage how cool or warm your home is throughout the day.

You can also use curtains to help keep your home or business cool during the summer. It helps to block out the UV rays of the sun. Then to warm up your home during the winter, you can open the curtains and allow the sun to heat up your rooms. This reduces the amount of work your HVAC system has to do.

Close Registers and Change the Filters

If there are certain areas of your home that aren’t being used, you should close the register and door of that room. This will prevent wasting heat or air in your business or home. Then when the rooms are being used, you can simply open the vents an hour or two before use. Also, make sure to check the filters of your HVAC system to ensure that they are clean. Once they become too dusty, you will need to switch them out with new ones. Filters are responsible for catching dirt, dust and other contaminants. When it becomes dirty, it will fail to keep contaminants out, giving you poor indoor air quality.

It’s a good idea to use a technician for regular maintenance of your HVAC system, so that all components are well taken care of. No one wants to deal with a broken air conditioner or heater when they need it most.

If your roof is allowing air to leak through to your attic, it is likely warming up your home in a way that runs up your energy costs. Whether your roof needs to be replaced or repaired because of cosmetic or technical purposes, you will need to find a contractor that can do it for you. Going about replacing your rooftop should be done with careful research. You can use the following tips to help you get your roof repaired.

Do Your Research

When looking for a roofing contractor, it’s important that you do as much research as possible beforehand. This will allow you to pinpoint a contractor that is capable of giving you satisfactory work. You don’t want to hire a fly-by-night roofer that is going to rip you off. You will need to locate a contractor that has been in this industry for at least a year or more. Find out how long the contractor has been in the area. Be wary of new companies because you never know if they will stick. License and insurance should also play a role in who you hire to work on your rooftop.

The integrity of a business can be researched by going to the Better Business Bureau Web site. Many companies are up there and have ratings. You can also look for customer reviews that aren’t associated with the company’s Web site.

Don’t Pay Contractor Upfront

No contractor should ask you to pay for work before you have received it. This is a shady move, so be wary. It’s normal for a contractor to request a deposit, but not the full sum for the job. In most scenarios, the roofer will need money to begin the work and the rest can be delivered after the work has been completed. Make sure that a proper job has been done before paying up.

When it’s time to sign the contract, make sure to read it over thoroughly. It’s also a good idea to ensure that the contractor’s written proposal is already created and on hand. The proposal should go over scheduling of the project, which will include a date of completion, a detailed cost analysis, procedures that will be used, warranty information and the company’s contact information. Without a proper proposal, the contractor can take his sweet time and milk your money, since nothing was agreed upon as far as scheduling and costs. Contractors and their workers are paid by the labor hour, so that can quickly add up when you’re dealing with slowpokes.

When looking for a roofing contractor, you can do so by browsing around the Internet. Create a list of local roofing contractors and begin soliciting quotes from each of them. The one you choose should be based on their quote, reputation, years of experience, years in business and their demeanor. Do you due diligence and you should be alright.

To have a contractor look at your roof, contact the licensed experts at Daniel’s Design & Construction today!

Improving your home for the summertime can be done in so many different ways – choosing the right home remodeling project for your household takes careful planning and budgeting. The home improvement project you choose will be based on your goals. Are you looking to bring down your power bills over the summer? Or maybe you’re looking to add features to your home that will make summer more fun, such as a swimming pool or deck? Whatever you decide, make sure you hire a professional home remodeling contractor that is licensed, insured and experienced.

Cool Down with Outdoor Additions

There’s no downplaying summer heat, so why not improve your home in ways that will make it cooler? One way to do this is to have a screened in deck built. Better yet, you can even have windows installed, so that the outdoor heat can’t get inside. This way, you can have fans or even a portable air conditioner that can be used to cool down the space. A swimming pool attachment to the deck wouldn’t be a bad idea either. This could be a covered area with lawn chairs and tables. Trees are great for shade, so why not have a couple strategically planted, so that you can enjoy being outdoors without the sun beating down on you?

Going Energy Efficient

Likely, you’ll have your fans and air conditioner running non-stop to keep cool during the summer. Why not purchase an EnergyStar compliant model air conditioner, so that you won’t have to worry about it running up your light bill? You can also have a contractor come to your home to insulate the windows, doors, floors and other areas that may have air leakage. Specialists will bring machinery that can locate air leaks that are causing your air conditioning system to overwork.

Build an Additional Room

Room additions are ideal if you’re looking for a new space to do activities, like watch movies, play or work. It’s summertime, so likely you’re going to want to build a fun room for yourself and/or your children. If you don’t have a designated room where games can be played, then consider having a room built for this specific purpose. A contractor can help you locate the best spot to make the room addition.

Transform Your Basement

A cheaper way to add a room to your home this summer would be to transform a current space, such as the basement. Basements are ideal for transformations because they go virtually unused for the entirety of its lifespan. Other than being a storage space for boxes and appliances, you can make it into a usable room, like a playroom, movie room, office or even a bedroom. If you’re planning to have guests visiting for the summer and lack space, a bedroom would be ideal.

Making home improvements can improve your quality of living, making it more enjoyable to stay at home this summer. Explore your options to see which renovations would be right for you and your family.

Your bathroom is a place that should be comfortable; a place where you can spend hours if you have to grooming yourself. A bathroom remodeling project is underway if you have a bathroom that makes you want to get out fast. The design, décor and fixtures that you have in your restroom all play a role in how it makes you feel. Improving the overall atmosphere of the bathroom to a more relaxing environment is possible and doesn’t have to cost too much money. Of course, the more you spend, the more comfort you can bring.

Install Luxury Water Fixtures

One way to remodel your bathroom is with luxury water fixtures. You’ll find that modern technology has consumed the bathroom fixture department and come with many great features. For instance, you can find shower stalls that have a contemporary feel, yet has many great settings for the shower head. Some even come with two shower heads and seats attached to the wall. Those with bathtubs can be found with massaging jets with multiple settings as well. Then the sinks come in a variety of designs, like the one that resembles a bowl. Making your bathroom look and feel luxurious is easy and affordable when you shop at the right place and hire the right bathroom remodeling contractor.

Upgrade to Heated Floors

The floors in your bathroom make a big difference in the appearance it has. When you have gorgeous stone or hardwood floors, your guests will take notice to it right away. Compliments are definitely underway when you have bathrooms with beautiful flooring. But why just go with looks when you can have other added features like heating. During the cooler months, having heated floors in the bathroom will come in handy. This will also eliminate the need for rugs, which would only cover up your beautiful hardwood heated floors.

Buy Stainless Steel Appliances

If your kitchen is frequently visited by guests and visitors, you’re going to want it to impress them. What better way to impress them than with gorgeous stainless steel appliances? Your refrigerator, dishwasher, stove and trash compactor can all have the modernized look of stainless steel. These are quite popular in kitchens across America and for good reason. They’re easy to maintain and have aesthetic appeal. You can find glass top stoves that are stainless steel, which means easier cleaning after you cook.

Install New Cabinets and Countertops

To finish off the kitchen’s luxury feel, you can go ahead and replace your cabinets and countertops with new ones. You can go with cherry wood oak, a dark mahogany or other color and material that you feel would look great for your cabinets. Matching your cabinets with your new countertops is important for making things mesh together well. You want your kitchen to feel like it’s out of a luxury magazine.

Summertime is here and running your air conditioner non-stop will quickly run up your energy bill. During the summer, a lot of appliances are used more often, especially if you have kids that are out of school for the break. Making your home energy efficient is something that can and should be done – at least if you want to be able to have extra cash to enjoy your summer vacation. Below, you will find a couple of ways that you can lower your power bills, while still enjoying your summer.

Remodel with Energy Efficiency in Mind

If you’re planning a home improvement project this summer, you should hire a contractor who can help you design it in an energy efficient manner. There are different ways that you can do this. For instance, you should avoid having a large north-facing window installed because that will only bring in more sunlight, which is fine in the winter, but will warm your home too much during the summer. You can also have the contractor insulate your home, so that air leakage is prevented. This will keep inside air in and outside air out, so that your air conditioning and heating system don’t become overworked.

Upgrade Appliances to EnergyStar Brands

Your appliances are used multiple times daily, so they are the main culprit for raised energy bills. Your washing machine and dryer, air conditioning system, furnace, dishwasher and stove. All of these can be replaced with brands that are EnergyStar compliant. These can be found at appliance stores everywhere or even online. If you need help with finding the right models, a knowledgeable contractor can assist you.

Improving Energy Efficiency by Room

Making the rooms in your home more energy efficient is very possible with the following tips:

•	Kitchens: many appliances in your home can be found in the kitchen, which is the perfect place to start your project. Whenever you can, you should defrost your freezer when the ice becomes thicker than 5mm. Cleaning the fridge’s condenser coil regularly with a vacuum is also advised. Don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s full and ensure that the oven doors and refrigerator have tight seals to prevent air leakage.

•	Bathrooms and Laundry Room: these areas use a lot of hot water, so you’ll want to attack the faucets to ensure that they don’t have a leak. You can also install faucets that have lower pressure, so that too much water doesn’t come out at once.

•	Bedrooms and Living Rooms: having insulation installed around the windows and doors is a good idea. Heating and cooling zoning can be done to prevent wasting energy. Installing solar panels, tinting film and heavy curtains are also great ideas.

•	Basements: make sure that the furnace in the basement isn’t higher than 140 degrees Fahrenheit and ensure that the water heater is insulated, so that it doesn’t cool off too quickly. Insulating the cracks in the walls will also help unnecessary leakage.

Decks are a great addition to a home and can even boost the value of your property. Designing your new deck can be done in many different ways, other than with traditional patio furniture. If you need help with coming up with design ideas for your deck, read on!

Use and Outdoor Dining Room Design

A lot of people like to eat on their decks, so why not do a dining room design for yours? You can have a table placed in the middle of the deck, with enough chairs to accommodate your family and/or guests. A bistro table can be used, which offers a nice look to most decks. But if this isn’t large enough, then you can go with a bigger wooden table. Whatever type of table you decide to have, make sure that you can place a large umbrella in the middle, so that you can eat without the sun beaming down on you. You can find umbrellas as large as ten to 12 feet wide. There are also different styles, including wood, aluminum and canvas.

Create a Second Living Room

If you want to recreate your living room, but in the outdoors, then your deck is a great place to do it. You can have everything you want out there, include couches, recliners and even a weather-resistant LCD television set. Don’t forget about having a frill and cooler, so that you can cook up something to eat while you watch your favorite shows or sports channels.

A Party Theme for Gatherings

If the primary use of your deck will be for the many gatherings you will be having, then you can do a party theme. This can include a tiki, bar, small counter with stools and lounge chairs. The design of your deck can be whimsical or classy, depending on the type of parties that you intend to throw. You can visit your local patio furniture store to find chairs, tables and even outdoor fireplaces. For the cooler months, a patio heater can be used.

Camping Out Under the Stars

Your deck can easily be used as a sleeping quarters by purchasing luxury daybeds available at patio furniture stores. If you want to sleep outdoors, taking in nature and its glory, then you should look into adding convertible beds to your deck. This can be a great experience for the children, so invite them along one warm summer night. You can use tents, sleeping bags or just use the patio furniture.

Designing with the Kids in Mind

Another way to entertain the kids is to incorporate certain designs into your deck that will make it more kid friendly. For instance, you can have a sand box built into the deck or even have a storage space for all of their toys. Since the kids will be playing on the deck, it’s important that the patio furniture is sturdy.

Spring is here, soon will come summer and then the cooler months will roll around again. If you are thinking about having a patio built for your home or already have one, then there are a couple of ways that you can make it the perfect hangout spot no matter what the weather is like outside. Read on to learn more about how you can make this so.

Use Ceiling to Floor Shades

During the cooler months, you can help block out some of the wind by using ceiling to floor shades or blinds. You should choose ones that are made with materials like bamboo or wood, since they are inexpensive and quite effective at blocking wind. It will also add a great look to your patio. This way, you and your family and friends can enjoy being outdoors even when it’s winter.

Buy Patio Furniture that Retains Warmth

No one likes sitting on patio furniture that is cold or moist, so try to find chairs that will add comfort. Metal and plastic patio furniture are durable against most weather, but during the winter time, you may not like sitting on these chairs. Instead, you should have chairs that have insulating padding, that is also waterproof. This way, you have a cushioned seat that stays warm when you’re sitting on it.

Add More Lighting

To make your patio feel more hospitable, you can add more lighting to the décor. Instead of having the traditional single bulb in the middle of the ceiling, you can have several lamps around the patio, offering a cozy feel. This will make evenings on the patio a lot more comfortable. You can even place a dimmer switch on the lights.

Buy a Heating Source

During the cooler months, you want to make your patio feel as comfortable as possible. With that being said, you should look for a heating source, such as portable fire pits, fireplaces and portable heaters. There are permanent heating sources that you can use, but these will be more expensive to have installed. However, if you do decide to have one installed, it will increase the value of your property.

Build an Outdoor Kitchen

The great thing about having a screened in patio is that you get to go outside whenever you wish. Even during the wintertime, you can enjoy being outdoors. So why not add a kitchen to your patio, so that you can cook up something hot while you and your family and friends enjoy being outside? Outdoor kitchens aren’t as expensive as indoor kitchens and can be quickly built by a contractor. All you need is a grill, cabinets for dishes and a mini fridge to store drinks and food items.

Having a deck built onto your home can be very rewarding while you live in the home and even when you decide to sell it. If you would like to make this investment for your house, give Daniel’s Design & Construction a call today!

If you don’t have sufficient counter space, you could easily purchase a kitchen island and have it installed by a remodeling contractor. A kitchen island has many great uses and comes in many different styles, sizes and materials. Choosing a location for your kitchen island shouldn’t be too hard, unless you have a cramped kitchen. With a kitchen island installed, you will be able to function in your kitchen ore effectively, have less clutter and even have more storage space, depending on the type of kitchen island that you purchase.

Choosing a Location for your Kitchen Island

A lot of kitchens are pretty large and have lots of center space. Everything is pushed up against the walls, such as the cabinets, appliances and counters. However, placing the kitchen island in the middle isn’t always ideal, especially if they want an open floor plan for their kitchen. Some people place kitchen islands close to the work triangle, near the stove, fridge and sink.

Are Kitchen Islands Convenient or an Annoyance?

Even though installing a kitchen island could take up a lot of kitchen space, if you have one with the right design, it will be more of a convenience than a nuisance. You’ll have more countertop space to cook and prepare food. Plus, you can have less clutter, thanks to the added storage space that comes with many of the kitchen islands.

When looking for a kitchen island, keep in mind the size of your kitchen. Kitchen islands come in a large assortment of colors, sizes and material types. You can even have one customized for your kitchen. The installation of your kitchen island shouldn’t interfere with pathways and should still allow you and your family to navigate through your kitchen smoothly. Make sure that the model kitchen island that you choose matches the décor of your kitchen as well. Nothing is tackier than having a mismatching kitchen.

Kitchen Island Designs

As mentioned, there are many varieties of kitchen islands that you can choose from. Some are L-shaped and others are rectangular, pentagonal, v-shaped or U-turned. You will need to take measurements of your kitchen space where you plan to have the kitchen island installed.

When it comes to appliances, some people have their sink, stove or dishwasher installed into the kitchen island. Depending on the design of your kitchen, this could be a great idea. If you decide to do this, you will need the proper electrical or plumbing to make it happen. Then choosing the materials of the countertop should be done based on your cooking style. If you chop a lot of food or place hot pots on the counter, then you will want to look for materials that can survive through those.

With a maintenance checklist, you will be able to keep an eye on specific areas to prevent the need for costly repairs. Spring is the time for rain, being outdoors and enjoying the warmer air. Of course, this also means potential problems for your home, if you’re not careful. Spring is also the time for cleaning and getting everything looking great again, especially your lawn and home’s exterior. Not every homeowner knows what to keep an eye on, so take a look at these tips to help you better maintain your property.

Avoid Flooding Hazards

Since Spring brings lots of rain, it is possible for flooding to occur. To prevent this from happening, you should check the low areas of your home, near the foundation. It’s common for soil to become compacted during the winter, then when the Spring rains come, this causes flooding. You will have to fill out the soil thoroughly, so that water seeps through the earth, instead of creating puddles. When flooding does occur, it can cause damage to your foundation, which can lead to further destruction to your home, especially as it begins to crack. Summer flooding can lead to insect infestation, so be sure to keep an eye on the low areas of your home.

Check Your Rain Gutters

Water is a problem again when you don’t have properly working rain gutters. Check them out to see if there are any leaks that could cause water to accumulate around your home and sometimes in your basement. There should be no debris or trash inside of the downspouts either. Make sure to keep them cleaned throughout the winter and spring, so that you won’t have to worry about this problem.

Get a Chimney Sweep

Take a look at your chimney, if you have one, and see if it needs to be swept clean by a professional. Check for any damage to the exterior of your chimney as well. A professional can come to your home to inspect and clean your chimney for you.

Remove Firewood Away from Your Home

To avoid fire hazards, you should have your winter firewood removed at least two feet away from your property and about one and a half feet from the ground. You can arrange this by having the wood sit on a table that is further away from your home.

Check Your Appliances and Equipment

It’s common for appliances to break down during or right after winter, especially your HVAC system. It may have been overrunning during the winter. You will need to check your unit to be sure that it is ready to be ran during the summertime. Your lawn equipment should also be checked, such as your lawn mower, which will be needed during the summer as well.

Getting everything prepared before the summer can help to make things easier for you when the time comes. Dealing with breakdowns at this time would be counterproductive. If you need experts to help give your home proper maintenance this spring, give the professionals at Daniel’s Design & Construction, Inc. today!

Thinking about how you can make your bathroom more serene and relaxing? There are a variety of things that you can do that are cost-effective. Some things you will need a remodeling contractor for and others you can do yourself. Having a bathroom that is as comfortable as possible is much-needed, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time there grooming and bathing yourself. Your bathroom should be a place where you can go for ultimate privacy and possibly even get a spa-like feel. With the right appliances and layout, you can have a bathroom that allows you to pamper yourself like never before.

Bathe in Style and Luxury

One way to improve your bathroom for more comfort is to add a soaker tub that is large and deep. Having a bubble bath in a standard tub can be cramped and uncomfortable. At least this way, you can feel truly relaxed. You should refrain from the typical noisy Jacuzzi tubs that many homeowners would install. Instead, you should get a free-standing cast iron tub that can be placed in the middle of your bathroom or near a wall, depending on your layout. This type of tub will keep in the heat, allowing you to take a longer hot bath whenever you need to.

Add Some Entertainment

While bathing in your tub or grooming yourself, you can enjoy an entertainment center that consists of a radio and/or television. Your best bet is to mount a flat screen television, of course this should be away from your water areas, so that electrocution isn’t an issue. Other ways you can entertain yourself is with a small fridge filled with your favorite drinks. If your bathroom is large enough, lounge chairs can be placed inside as well. You may want to relax in the sauna like room after taking a steamy bath or shower.

Maximize the Space in Your Bathroom

Your bathroom shouldn’t feel cramped up, so the design you have should involve more space. One way to create space is to have a free-standing shower stall installed in your bathroom. Then you can have your toilet separated from where your shower area is, giving you more privacy. A divider wall can be built to improve the privacy of the toilet and shower area as well. You can also try looking into having a vessel sink installed, which offers a more modernized feel. These bowl-like sinks don’t come with the large vanity that others do, giving your bathroom a larger appearance.

There are many other improvements that you can make to your bathroom, such as installing new countertops, floors, sinks and toilet. With the right layout, you can have a gorgeous bathroom that is more comfortable, luxurious and relaxing.
